The Hermle 340-020 was the most commonly used movement in the world. This movement was used by just about every clock maker around including but not limited to: Howard Miller, Seth Thomas, Colonial, Hamilton and others. The Hermle 340-020 is a wonderful movement that has been produced for over ___ years, and is still made to this day.
The Hermle 340-020 mechanical clock movement plays the Westminster song on the 1/4 hours and at the top of the hour this movement will strike the number of hours. There was a period during the 1970's that Hermle used a few plastic parts in this movement, however, all the newer 340-020's are made of solid brass. The Hermle 340-020 comes in two versions, one is what is called a "non-bushed" version and a Bushed version. The movement is made of two brass plates with several holes in the plates. These holes are called "bushings". The tip of each gear is called a pivot. The pivot sticks through the bushing. Each bushing is sized perfectly to the size of the pivot, allowing for a smooth operation. On a bushed movement , a few of the bushings are drilled out larger and a smaller bronze bushing is installed into the oversized hole. This process allows for the steel pivot to rub on the bronze, reducing the long term wear. A non-bushed movement simply has the holes drilled into the brass plates, allowing the same steel pivot rubbing on a brass surface. Some folks say the bronze will last longer, however it is of our opinion that if you clean and oil your new clock movement on a regular bases, purchasing a bushed or non-bushed movement wont matter. A non-bushed Movement is slightly less in cost than a bushed movement, However they both function exactly the same way.
