How to Set the Beat on Your Pendulum Clock

9/10/2015

Often a pendulum clock will stop when it has been moved, bumped or even a too aggressive push to restart a pendulum.  It is not broken, only out of beat.  This only takes a few minutes to readjust and all pendulum clock owners should learn how, as this will happen eventually.

How to Set the Beat of the Pendulum Clock

TIP – Prevention:  For wall clocks, always remove your pendulum before taking the clock off the wall.  If the pendulum stays in the clock it may scratch the inside of the case, as well as change the beat and then the clock may not work.

Check the “Beat”:  Listen to the tick-tock on the clock and see if it is a nice even tick-tock.  It should sound steady and even like a metronome.  Equal time between the TICK and the TOCK.  The pendulum needs to swing exactly equal distances from dead center to the left, as from dead center to the right.  If a clock is out of beat, the pendulum will swing for a few minutes then stop, even if the clock case is level.

Setting The Beat of the Pendulum Clock
If the beat is irregular like: tock-tick——tock-tick- an adjustment must be made or the clock will stop.  This can be done by either try leveling again from left to right by moving the clock very slightly from the bottom until you hear the most even tick-tock.  This may not be physically level for the clock case.

If this fails or you don’t wish to have a clock case crooked on your wall, you may take off the pendulum and slightly move the pendulum leader from left to right or right to left until it almost or starts moving back and forth on its own. It should have the same feel from dead center to right and dead center to left.  Rehang the pendulum and the clock should continue and you are done.

If setting the beat has not solved the problem and it is a newer clock, please check the steps below:

My clock is in beat, but the pendulum still stops swinging on my clock.

Hands have to be free!  Make sure the hands are free from touching the other hands and second hand.  Also make sure the hands are not touching the dial at any point.  If the hands are touching, this will stop the clock.  Slightly bend the hands away from each other by holding the hand still toward the center and slightly pulling the hands away from each other.

Is the Pendulum dragging?  Look into the lower side window and watch the pendulum swing. If the pendulum is touching the chime rods toward the back or touching the weights toward the front, the pendulum will stop.  This indicates a problem in leveling from front to rear.

Leveling ~ Your clock will need to be level from front to back and side to side.

My grandfather clock has stopped after we moved.  Can I fix it?

9/9/2015

Everything was fine until we moved the grandfather clock.  After we set it up in the new
location, the grandfather clock has stopped.

While grandfather clocks are misunderstood to be very fragile and delicate, they are actually
very durable.  When the grandfather clock is not working after a move, there are a few problems
to look for that can be easily fixed.

1) Examine the dial on the grandfather clock and check to make sure the hands are not touching
or hanging on any parts of the dial or second hand.

2) Check the leveling of the grandfather clock.  There are 4 adjustable levelers on the bottom
corner of most grandfather clocks.  If your clock does not have adjustable feet, then you will
have to use some type of shim to level the grandfather clock’s case.

3) Start the pendulum swinging with a mild push of the hand and make sure your pendulum is
swinging freely and not touching the chime rods or weights.

4) Listen to the ticking of the grandfather clock to make sure you are hearing a very even “tick-
tock” even space between the tick and the tock.  If not, the clock is out of beat and needs to be
corrected.

If you listen to the clock just after you give the pendulum a push and notice that the clock is not
tick tocking evenly, this means the clock is out of beat. The clock must have an even tick–tock –
tick–tock.

If the sound is uneven, like tick/tock  — tick/tock  —  tick/tock … read (how to set the beat on
your grandfather clock ) to correct this.  This is very common after a grandfather clock has been
moved from one location to another.

* FYI, the weights of the clock do have a specific order.  If you have a grandfather clock that has
3 weights, typically the heaviest weight goes on the right chain or cable (your right facing the
clock).  The other 2 will depend on the clocks movement.  If you get the clock running and the ¼
chiming sounds good, but the hour striking sounds a little slow or sluggish, swap the center and
left weights to see if the hour strike sounds better.

If one of the above four steps do not seem to be the problem, it would be best to call in a clock
repair specialist at this point.

My clock strikes  the wrong time...

9/3/2015

Clock repair sometimes does not require a service tech to come out to your home.  If your clock is striking a number of times which does not correspond with what your clock says, this can be fixed easily by following the instructions below:

Let's say your clock is showing 10 o'clock and it is only striking 5 times at the top of the hour.  Simply move the hour hand to the correct number of strikes the clock is striking.  In this example, you would simply move the hour hand to the 5 o'clock mark.

Once the hour hand is moved to the correct spot, you can now set the clock to the correct time of the day and the clock should strike the correct number of strikes.

Keep in mind that whenever you move the minute hand, you will get the chiming and striking out of sequence. Most modern day clocks are self correcting and usually take one or two hours to self correct. Once you set the time, just leave the clock alone for at least an hour and it should self correct.

Please feel free to contact Clock Repair Service if you have any further questions.  You may leave a comment or email us at  info@clockrepairservice.com.

My 2 outside weights won't drop...

9/2/2015

Picture
We often receive questions or calls about a customer's grandfather clock weights on the outside are not dropping and that only the center weight is dropping and the clock is not chiming.

Here is a quick description how the clock weights work.:

The grandfather clocks' weights are what powers the clock.  The left weight (your left facing the clock) powers the hour striking of the clock.  The center weight powers the time side of the clock and the right weight (the heaviest) will power the 1/4 hour chiming side of the clock.

The time side of the clock will tell the chiming side of the clock what to do and the chiming side will tell the hour striking side what to do.  If the time side tells the 1/4 hour chiming side to chime, but it is hung up, it will not be able to chime, nor will it be able to tell the hour striking side what to do.

If the clock is running but not chiming, then only the center weight will drop.  Typically, what we find is that the grandfather clock has not been serviced and the oil has dried up in the movement and therefore the chiming side of the clock is hung up, or worst, worn out.

We service around 650 grandfather clocks in customers'  homes each year.  Most of the time a good cleaning and re-oiling will get the clock up and running properly.  The manufacturers of all style clocks recommend that you have your clock cleaned and re-oiled every 2-3 years.

A good cleaning and re-oiling of a clock every 2-3 years will minimize the damage to your clocks' movement and keep it running for years.  The cleaning and re-oiling is also the least expensive  repair of your grandfather clocks' movement and is the best place to start.  Once the grandfather clocks' movement  is cleaned, the technician will be able to look at the condition of the grandfather clocks' movement in order to determine if there are worn parts that might need replacing.
